“Mooncake and Dice” is a cultural themed poster that aims to demonstrate the significant parts of the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Mooncake festival, in China. In this poster, it’s included specifically with mooncakes, which is a special dessert Chinese people would have on the day.
I was the designer for the "Mooncake and Dice" poster, which was centered around the Mid-Autumn Festival. The poster incorporated mooncakes, a key dessert of the festival, and dice representing the Bobing game from my hometown of Xiamen. I aimed to create a design that not only highlights the cultural significance of the festival but also conveys the warm, joyful feelings I associate with it.
One of the challenges I faced was balancing the design elements to reflect the festival’s warmth and cultural meaning while also making the poster visually appealing. I experimented with different color combinations but struggled to find the perfect harmony to convey the festive mood effectively. Another challenge was adjusting the typography to better represent the festival’s vibe, but I found that I didn’t make the necessary changes to achieve that specific atmosphere. Additionally, my limited knowledge of Adobe Illustrator hindered my efficiency in completing the design to my ideal standards.
The primary challenge faced by the audience is a lack of awareness or connection to the Mid-Autumn Festival and its cultural significance. Many people may not understand the deeper meaning behind the mooncake or the Bobing game, especially the regional connection to Xiamen. The challenge was to create a design that not only educates the audience about these cultural aspects but also evokes the warmth and joy associated with the festival in a visually engaging way. Additionally, the visual design needed to bridge the gap between a traditional cultural theme and modern design expectations.
To address this, the solution was to incorporate elements that directly represent the festival, such as mooncakes, dice, and persimmons, with cultural symbolism. The dice specifically highlighted the regional Bobing game, which added a unique touch. The color palette and warm autumn tones were chosen to evoke feelings of calmness and togetherness, which are central to the festival's celebration of family and reunion. The design aimed to make the festival’s significance more accessible, encouraging the audience to learn more about the tradition while enjoying the visual warmth of the piece.
